I knew that Mayor Bill de Blasio and Public Advocate Letitia James had gotten New York City Council to eliminate the salary history line item from all agency applications. But, I was totally blown away by learning that it now extends to corporate entities as well.
Based on U.S. Census data, here are the break outs for every dollar (on average) that a New York white male earns:
- White women at 84%
- Asian women at 63%
- Black women at 55%
- Hispanic women at 46%
Anybody noticing what I’m noticing? I raise this issue because I spoke with a friend of mine yesterday. The brother gets up at 3 a.m. daily to gather himself for his 7 a.m. shift. Like any strong union man would.
Tone is a maintenance man who works at a local hospital. He’s 60 years old and has been on the job for close to 20 years. So, I asked him: “Aren’t you nearing retirement?” His response was that he had planned to retire at 55. Then, he had to bump it up to 60. Now, he’s thinking more like he’ll have to work until he’s 65.
His projected pension when he’s 65? Not even $1,000 per month.
