Roland Martin‘s got a very large audience. There’s no doubt about that.
I guess his viewers don’t care what his role was in getting interim Democratic National Committee chair Donna Brazile the boot as a result of the CNN Presidential Town Hall shenanigans. Or, his shameless plugging for Hillary Clinton throughout the election cycle. Or, any of a host of other thangs he may have done over his media career that folk won’t discuss publicly.
When he had Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke on his News One Now show nearly a year ago, Roland couldn’t WAIT to tell folks across his varied social media platforms how he roasted Clarke in a debate about the Black Lives Matter movement. Then, all but laughed at former NBC Apprentice star Omarosa Manigault and OTHER Black Republican preachers who met with President-elect Donald Trump just outside of Cleveland this past spring. In fact, he accused the group of getting played for nothing more than a photo-op.
Let’s face it: Roland Martin likes to serve as the fact-driven antagonist. It feeds his ego and makes his viewers think he’s fearless when, in reality, it seems Roland wants to be on the cover of somebody’s magazine.
That’s his M.O.
Roland Martin is also a HUGE advocate for school choice. By the way, have you heard him mention anything about State of Michigan Republican donor Betsy DeVos and her appointment to the top spot at the U.S. Department of Education? I haven’t.
Now, I see he went on MSNBC with Lawrence O’Donnell wearing a TV One lapel pin. That means he’s still distributing through the Black-targeted network and he’s got the greenlight from Cathy Hughes (or whoever) to pursue other deals that don’t conflict with his morning time slot for the term of his contract there.
This hints at two of the three newly-signed deals he mentioned last week. The question, for me, is whether or not the third deal is the one that makes Roland Martin the heir-apparent to Tom Joyner‘s morning-drive slot across Radio One and its national syndication in January ’17.
It ain’t the same as CNN. But, it beats a blank.
